Artist Statement

Creating art has been a life long passion and what brings me joy. I think of my one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces as art that travels through the day with the wearer. My hope is that each piece will make a visual and tactile connection.

There is an intuitive dialogue that happens between the materials, drawings, and images formed in my mind’s eye. The piece becomes itself through time. I strive to be authentic and to be a good craftsman. My background in painting and assemblage has influenced my work in metals. I am inspired by objects of other cultures, art movements of the past, and sights in my daily life.

Lucia Behmer is an artist creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces and objects. She started creating art in her pre-school years with an array of materials and encouragement supplied by her father, who was an artist and educator.  After receiving a B.F.A. in painting at the University of Illinois in Urbana, she began her graduate work in painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She earned art teacher certification from National College of Education in Evanston, Illinois (now National Lewis University).

Lucia has taught children age 4-14 in private schools and children’s art programs in colleges in the Chicago area. Introducing children to materials and art processes has been rewarding. She believes that there are some things that can only be known through the hands.

Lucia has explored many materials and processes for her own art. She has exhibited her work in printmaking, assemblage, encaustics, and leather.

In 2007 Lucia began metals classes at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. There she studied with internationally acclaimed jewelry artist and brilliant teacher, Suzan Rezac. Lucia has exhibited her jewelry and objects in juried shows, galleries, and publications. In 2014, Lucia and her husband moved from metropolitan Chicago to a small harbor town in northern Michigan.
